Ethiopia has given us some of the world's greatest runners, including Abebe Bikila, who won the 1960 Olympic marathon in Rome in his bare feet, and Haile Gebrselassie, who set world records in the 1500m, 5k, 10k and marathon. Let's give them something back.

Runners from around the world combine to run 13,286 kms, the distance from Vancouver, Canada to Mekele, Ethiopia, by December 31, 2010.

imagine...

Together, runners raise over $100,000, enough money to build a primary school in a rural community in Ethiopia.

imagine...

The school as the center of the community, with clean water for drinking and hygiene, economically self-sustained through micro-irrigation and a food crop, and generations of children with the tools to learn and lead, for whom education is forever associated with health and abundance.

Commit to run just a small part of the journey, whether it is 13 or 1,300 kilometres.

Support us by buying the kilometres we are committing to run, whether it is one km or 100.

All funds go to imagine1day, a Vancouver-based charity which directly implements each school project. Every dollar you contribute will go directly to the costs of building a school. None of the funds are used for administration or overhead.

The need is great but so is the will to change. Ethiopia is one of the world's poorest nations, but it is politically stable. The government supports our efforts. The communities want our schools and work with us to build them. In this environment we can do the most good with our investment.

Aid is not a long term solution. At best it alleviates suffering in an emergency. At worst, it fosters corruption, upsets the local economy and creates a culture of dependence. Education provides a nation with the tools to help itself. With the ability to read, write and count, children have the opportunity to learn and access to the limitless possibilities that are otherwise not available.

Children are our future. They will inherit our world. They are our last chance to get it right. They aspire to be great and don't question whether it's possible.

imagine1day is changing the paradigm for charity. All administrative costs are covered by a generous endowment so that all contributions go directly to the project. Beyond that, you can direct how your money is spent. The projects are chosen on the basis of providing the most long term benefit for the least investment. imagine1day does not just benefit Ethiopia: it empowers its contributors. It is a forum where people can combine their passions and talents with an opportunity to make a difference.
